About
ILA

The
Monash International Law Association (ILA) represents students studying
law in the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the Faculty of Law,
Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
Monash
ILA strives to provide its members with a holistic
educational experience. In pursuance of this, the association provides
academic support, presents special lectures and seminars, coordinates several
social events, and liaises with sponsors in providing special member concessions
within and without the university. Most importantly, the association also
connects members to relevant articling, clerkship,
work experience, internship, and legal support employment opportunities
offered by local and international law firms and organisations.
Our
Mission
-
to provide support and guidance to law students and students interested
in the law
-
to encourage awareness in legal issues, insights and opportunities beyond
local boundaries
-
to provide a dynamic source of knowledge
-
to promote professional development
-
to foster a community both locally and
internationally
-
to encourage the maintenance of a balanced university lifestyle
As
part of our commitment to students, we aim to assist smooth transition for
new law students, whether it is from high-school, other countries or other
disciplines. Monash ILA provides frequent opportunities for networking with
other law students. Students in the past have found it much easier to settle
into the Monash Law social scene through our frequent social gatherings
(including BBQs, movie nights, inter-club ball, ice-skating, and inter-club
sporting events). Monash ILA also offers law students support through a
Mentor Program to help and guide students through law school.
A
major event on the Monash ILA calendar is the Monash Legal Careers Dinner
which, together with a wide of range of other career-related resources,
aims to assist students in making informed decisions on their future legal
careers. The Legal Careers Dinner provides
the opportunity for students to liaise with various representatives from
the legal and corporate industry on an individual basis, and to gain an
insight into the legal profession. The Legal Careers Dinner is a proud tradition
of Monash ILA and it has enjoyed great success in the past.
Monash
ILA recognises the increasing demand by employers (be it law firms, governmental
organisations, NGOs or other corporate organisations) for well-rounded,
skilled and open-minded individuals. Through organising events for social/public
services (e.g. Annual Red Cross Door-Knock Project) and joint student/organisation
social events, law students are encouraged to become socially aware and
to expand social networks. Monash ILA aims to become a forum where law students
can develop into not only legal-minded individuals, but also individuals
who are socially responsible, entrepreneurial, culturally sensitive and
proactive agents of change. We believe that
by contributing to the well-rounded development of students studying law,
we contribute to our communities with an overriding commitment to cultural
diversity and International understanding.
International Affiliations
The ILA has become a chapter organisation to the International Law Students Association, an organisation operating out of the DePaul University School of Law in Chicago, which seeks to promote matters of international law to universities worldwide and whom is the organiser of the Jessup Moot. Through this affiliation, we hope to assist students in becoming more aware of international law issues. More information about ILSA
