President's Report 2008 (Sem 1)

Welcome to ILA 2008! The club’s main aims are to promote the professional development of law students by providing them with information and assistance in pursing study and work opportunities abroad, to assist with university study and to promote a balanced university lifestyle.

The International Law Association has undergone significant changes over the past year with a broadening of focus from not only helping with the integration of international students, but also providing a focus to help settle post graduate students and to assist domestic students with their international aspirations. The previous committee made a tremendous effort in beginning these changes, and with a fresh year in 2008, we hope to present to the law school a completely re-vitalised image through our new member services and initiatives.

I would like to thank the law faculty for their overwhelming support over the past year. The various faculty staff has been paramount in assisting with a variety of club events and operations. The postgraduate scheme has been a great success with many of these students getting actively involved and coming to events. It gave the opportunity for this often unrepresented segment of the law school to meet new people and feel better integrated with the faculty. In the coming year, the club is planning specific events for post graduate students.

Last year, we provided services and events for students with the aim of helping students develop networks, accentuating their legal education, and assist in attaining and broadening their career goals. In addition to the traditional Legal Careers Dinner, other initiatives included a Koko Black evening where students could speak to lawyers and other professionals in an informal environment at Koko Black, study seminars, and a wide variety of other social events. We will continue to grow and develop these events for the current year.

The ILA has also become a chapter organisation to the International Law Students Association, an organisation operating out of the DePaul University School of Law in Chicago, which seeks to promote matters of international law to universities worldwide and whom is the organiser of the Jessup Moot. Through this affiliation, we hope to assist students in becoming more aware of international law issues.

Finally, I would like to wish all students a successful 2008 and hope that the ILA can play some part in achieving your goals.
